[edit]From a European language: compare obsolete English Japonia, New Latin Japonia, Italian Giappone. Transliterated into Armenian following Western Armenian pronunciation of the letter ճ (č), which is [d͡ʒ], as in Ճավա (Čava), Ճամայկա (Čamayka), Ճենովա (Čenova), ճիզվիտ (čizvit).
