Inherited from Old East Slavic ѩбедьникъ (jębedĭnikŭ), ѧбетьникъ (ębetĭnikŭ), borrowed from Old Norse embætti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją, derived from *ambahtaz (servant), from Gaulish ambaxtos (servant), from Proto-Celtic *ambaxtos (servant).

Compare Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌱𐌰𐌷𐍄𐌹 (andbahti, service, office) and Old High German ambahti (position, office).
