Inherited from Old Ruthenian толчи́, товчи́ (tolčí, tovčí), from Old East Slavic толчи (tolči), from Proto-Slavic *tьlťi, parallel to Proto-Slavic *telťi. Cognate with Belarusian таўчы́ (taŭčý), dialectal Russian толчи́ (tolčí), Old Church Slavonic тлъщи (tlŭšti), Czech tlouct, Polish tłuc.
