From Proto-Turkic *teŋri. Cognate with Kyrgyz теңир (teŋir), Kazakh тәңір (täñır), Kumyk тенгири (teñiri), Crimean Tatar tañrı, Tatar тәңрe (täñre), Bashkir тәңре (təñre, god, sky), Uyghur تەڭرى (tengri), Salar danru, Turkish tanrı, Turkmen taňry, etc.

Usage notes

The standard spelling is теҥери but other spellings are also used and pronunciation varies, often the final И can cease to exist. Alternative terms are теҥере (teŋere), теҥре (teŋre), etc.
