Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic мьстьникъ (mĭstĭnikŭ, avenger), from Proto-Slavic *mьstьnikъ (avenger). By surface analysis, (obsolete) месть (mestʹ, vengeance) +‎ -ник (-nyk) or from (rare) ме́сний (mésnyj, vengeful) +‎ -ик (-yk). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic мьстьникъ (mĭstĭnikŭ).
