Etymology

From chalco- (χαλκο- (chalko-)) + -gen instead of expected -gon, neuter of -γόνος (-gónos), as in French chalcogène, English chalcogen, etc. From Ancient Greek χαλκός m (khalkós, copper) + γόνος m (gónos). Morphologically, substantivised neuter of adjective χαλκογόνος (chalkogónos).
