From analysis of the earlier form τζανερίκι (tzaneríki) (now dialectal) as τζάνερο (tzánero)+-ίκι (-íki, “diminutive suffix”); in fact from Ottoman Turkish جان اریكی (can eriği, “cherry plum”).
