Etymology

Ultimately a reborrowing: in the chemical sense, from German Zirkon (“zircon mineral”) via French zircon, formed in the 1780s from Arabic زَرْقُون (zarqūn, “zircon, minium”). Itself زَرْقُون (zarqūn) is from Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zargōn), a borrowing from Ancient Greek Συρικόν (Surikón, “minium, red lead”, literally “Syrian [stone]”) perhaps transformed under the influence of Middle Persian *zarr (“gold”). Doublet of ζιργκόν (zirgkón).
