Etymology

[edit]

From Byzantine Greek γδί(ν) (gdí(n)), from Koine Greek ἰγδίον (igdíon), diminutive of Ancient Greek ἴγδις (ígdis), of Pre-Greek origin (evidenced by cluster "-γδ-" per Beekes). Ultimate origin may be from Hurrian 𒀉𒆠 (/idki, itki/, mortar), from the root 𒀉 (/id-/, to beat). Doublet of ιγδίο (igdío).
