From Demotic p-ꜣlq, from Late Egyptian p(ꜣ)-jw-rq (Philae, literally the Island of the Turning). Compare Sahidic Coptic ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲕ (pilak), Bohairic Coptic ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲕϩ (pilakh), Meroitic 𐦧𐦢𐦬𐦡𐦳𐦡 (pileqe).
