From Proto-Balto-Slavic *jeˀraˀ (spring harvest), from Proto-Indo-European *yóh₁r̥ (year). Cognate with Latvian jērs (lamb), Proto-Slavic *ěrъka (whence Polish jarka (spring harvest; young ewe)).[1]
