Proto-Celtic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Derived from Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥.

[edit]

*sāwūl n[1]

  1. sun (more specifically our star)

Declension

[edit]
Neuter consonant stem
singular dual plural
nominative *sāwūl *sūle *sūla
vocative *sāwūl *sūle *sūla
accusative *sāwūl *sūle *sūla
genitive *sūlos *sūlou *sūlom
dative *sūlē *sūlobom *sūlobos
locative *sūli *? *?
instrumental *sūle? *sūlobim *sūlobis

Reconstruction notes

[edit]

The *sāwol written in EDPC[2] may be a mistake for *sāwūl; there is no known mechanism to shorten the second vowel of the Proto-Indo-European *séh₂wōl it uses as the direct etymon (see also the r-stem nouns).

Klimp, preferring *séh₂wl̥ as the direct etymon, reconstructs *sāwal.[3]

Descendants

[edit]
  • Proto-Brythonic: *họwl (from nominative singular)
  • Old Irish: súil (eye) (from oblique stem)
  • >? Gaulish: Sulis
